Who Are We
The goal of the Safe Space Campaign is to identify and educate individuals who will affirm and support all persons regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression. Persons displaying the Safe Space Campaign symbol are committed to combating hatred and discrimination through assistance and support.
The Safe Space Campaign coordinator works hard to ensure that all persons interested in participating with the Safe Space Campaign are reached. Potential Safe Space Hosts are sought out by the Safe Space Coordinator, the student organization Spectrum Alliance, and the Office of Multicultural Affairs by such methods as: recommendation of students, coworkers, or current Safe Space Hosts; media outreach; identification of departmental members with commitment to diversity; and receptions. Potential hosts are invited to attend a three-hour workshop session in which participants are provided with the goals and structure of the Safe Space Campaign, information about the LGBT movement, given the opportunity to ask questions, and explore possible interactions with visitors as a result of their participation in the program.
Upon completion of the workshop, participants are asked to sign a pledge that indicates the required level of commitment for becoming a Safe Space Host. Participants are required to sign this pledge as well as attend the workshop in order to gain the status of Safe Space Host. Participants are expected to be at a certain level of support and acceptance for positive LGBT interactions. Participants not at this level are encouraged to postpone their commitment until they reach a higher level of acceptance.
Once these provisions have been satisfied, the participant is considered a Safe Space Host and given a sticker with the Safe Space logo on it to place on their office door or work area. The Safe Space logo symbolizes acceptance expressed by those who support the equal treatment of LGBT persons. Only faculty, staff and administrators are invited to become Safe Space Hosts due to the transient nature of the student population.
Safe Space Host campus contact information is made publicly available via website and print media. Hosts must be comfortable with this arrangement. Hosts are also subscribed to an electronic mailing list in order to facilitate communication with the Safe Space Coordinator.
We look forward to your participation with Safe Space in whatever capacity is possible for you. If you would like to volunteer your time working with the Safe Space Campaign, please contact the Safe Space Coordinator. |
