-The Kinsey studies showed that approximately 10% of the population is gay or lesbian. Approximately one in every four families has a member who identifies as gay or lesbian.
-Many gay men and lesbians sensed something “different” about themselves as early as age four or five. The age at which many acknowledge their sexual orientation to themselves is approximately 10 years old for both males and females (Herdt & Boxer, 1993).
-LGBTQ people are represented in all social classes, occupations, races, religions, and political persuasions in our society.
-Gay and lesbian youth are four times more likely to commit suicide than their heterosexual peers (Massachusetts Dept. of Education Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 1995).
-In 1973 the American Psychiatric Association votes to remove “homosexuality” from its list of mental illnesses. In the 90’s the organization will also come out against “reparative therapy” to cure queer people, recognizing that this therapy is ineffective, unneeded and damaging. The APA will also begin recognizing the rights of transgender people. |
