Educational Support

Black Student Union
The Black Student Union is a student organization interested in working to improve the quality of life for African American students by tackling issues that directly affect their community. The BSU, reestablished at LSU in 2000, acts as the umbrella organization for 23 predominately black student organizations on campus. With the third largest membership of any student organization on campus, BSU functions to:
  • Promote academic leadership skills among its members
  • Provide information through educational, cultural, historical, societal, and community programming that reflects African American student life
  • Promote unity and communication among students, faculty, and staff and administrators of color and improve the retention of a diverse student body at LSU

Spectrum Alliance and Safe Space
Spectrum Alliance is a student organization interested in creating an atmosphere of acceptance, equality, and inclusion for all persons regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Comprised of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, questioning, nonidentified and straight students, Spectrum Alliance works through channels of advocacy, community-building and education. Divided into four major committees (social, education, activism, and resources), these committees function to meet the mission and goals of Spectrum Alliance, which include:
  • Increasing awareness if the needs and concerns of LSU LGBTQS community
  • Fostering a safe environment and acceptance of diversity
  • Advocating the equality of all persons regardless of difference
  • Providing educational opportunities to combat homophobia and heterosexism
  • Increase the retention of a diverse student body on the LSU campus

One of the Spectrum Alliance's major initiatives is the Safe Space Campaign. This campaign identifies and educates members of the campus community who affirm and support all persons regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression. Individuals displaying Safe Space Campaign symbol indicate that they are supportive of all sexual orientations and gender identities; that they are committed to combating bias and discrimination; and that their space is a safe space where everyone can be themselves.
