History

The African American Cultural Center at Louisiana State University has been serving students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the Baton Rouge community since it opened its doors in 1993. The center represents the original concept of the Harambeé House (Harambeé is the Swahili word for “come together”) founded in 1972 and is now located in the old Christian Science building. The dedication/opening ceremony was held at the African American Cultural Center on January 17, 1993. The AACC has been described as not only a building, but the “manifestation of 20 years of effort by numerous people.”
